For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
Psalm 18: 27-33
Is it not incredible to know that our God is perfect in all of His ways? Not just some of the time. Not just when I think I need Him most. Not just when things go good. ALL THE TIME!
The more I reread this passage, the deeper my mind understands the significance of what the psalmist is saying. He is being afflicted! He has come through a battle. He is still facing an enemy. But He speaks of God, knowing all these things he is facing are part of the plan from a perfect God. Therefore, because God can be trusted, because He has been proven, because He has kept His word, He will continue to make his way through the trials and come out on top!
As foolish as we humans can be, we would not carry an untested, prototype shield or body armor into the midst of a firefight. Bullets whizzing by, guns all around, the enemy advancing and no one knows the answer as to whether the protection you are wearing can be trusted. No matter how fancy the gadget seems, I would be hollering for the old one..the one with the bullet dents with zero penetration points…the one that kept my fellow soldiers alive during the last stand off. I’d be begging for the one with the scars!
God doesn’t place us in a position where we must test His perfection. He asks us to trust it, because it has been proven! Yet, so many times we tend to go into the trials with a mind set of…”Well, I hope you got this God, because if you don’t I’m gonna be in a world of hurt.”
God wants us to face the battle with confidence in who He is, not because He said so, but because He has proven He is worthy, He is perfect, He is in control, He bears the scars of the work He has already accomplished.
What an incredible God of perfection we serve! He gives us strength for the day ahead. He gives us sure-footed reliance (makes my feet like hinds feet) when the problems seem insurmountable! He steadies us along the way and proves over and over that His ways are perfect!
Today’s morning cup of coffee: “Lord, help me remember all you are and all you have done. Help me place my trust in your perfection, not because of hope, but because you have proven you are trustworthy and perfect in all of your ways. May my life reflect the strength only you can give when times are tough and crisis hits.” AMEN
